美国前国务卿蓬佩奥2日晚间抵台，台湾总统蔡英文3日上午在总统府接见蓬佩奥并颁授“特种大绶景星勋章”，表彰他长期支持台湾参与国际事务，为台美关系带来许多突破性的卓著贡献。

蔡英文说，透过颁赠“特种大绶景星勋章”，除了表彰蓬佩奥对台美关系的贡献，她也要代表台湾人民，表达最深的感谢。

蔡英文：“蓬佩奥不仅长期支持台湾的国际参与，在任内更为台美关系带来了许多突破。包括解除对台交往限制、对台军售常态化，以及台美高层互访层级不断提高，这些都加深双方的互动合作。”

蔡英文说：“像蓬佩奥这样的美国好友来访，都充分展现出台美之间深厚的情谊。尤其，蓬佩奥在台湾的人气很高，来访的消息一出来，立刻引起许多关注和讨论，希望未来蓬佩奥前国务卿常常来访，我们一起继续为深化台美关系努力。”

蓬佩奥在受勋后致词表示，“我在美国时，就一直关心着台湾的人民，我知道台湾人民都是非常善良、热情，而且爱好自由的。今天终于见到心系已久的台湾人民。”

蓬佩奥指出，40年前他在军队服役时，了解做对的事情是必要的。领导者必须提供给人民自由、繁荣及稳定的生活，他很高兴蔡英文总统做到了。蓬佩奥强调，“如果过去将自由视为理所当然，看到近来欧洲所发生的事情，就可以知道，自由需要爱好和平的人持续与共同合作来维护。”

蓬佩奥说，他在国务卿任内解除对台交往限制与推动台美高层互访、美国代表团可以来台进行重要的对话等措施，“这些都是非常简单、正确且合适的决定。”蓬佩奥重申，这不仅是跨党派或政治的，更是美国的承诺，同时也符合台美利益，并有助于持续深化双边关系。

他提到，若是没有捍卫自由的决心，或对破坏自由与人权的行为不闻不问，无异于给予那些试图破坏自由改变人类生活的人看到造成伤害的机会。蓬佩奥说，“我相信在蔡总统任内，不会看着别人来践踏这样对自由的渴望，美国也会持续与台湾站在一起。”
