Sir Alex Ferguson will make a second
apology in a last-ditch attempt to escape a misconduct charge for
his verbal attack on Alan Wiley, the referee. After the Manchester United manager’s initial apology to Wiley, issued via the club’s website over the weekend, was branded “half-hearted” by referees’ chiefs, Ferguson is to send a letter of apology to the Football Association once he returns from a family holiday in the United States in the next 24 hours. He will also call Wiley to explain his comments. Ferguson has until Friday morning to submit his response to the FA after asking for more time to explain his outburst in the wake of United’s 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland ten days ago, when he accused Wiley of not being fit enough.
