2. Fleur and her death in
Rouge A. Fleur: (singing Cantonese Ballad) Look, there are a couple of swallows flying in the sun-set. The story begins with a banquet in a restaurant, an extravagant place where the wealthy masters and officials have banquets with their friends and the courtesans. Fleur is the courtesan who is invited. She is singing the famous Cantonese Ballad “Sorrows on an Autumn Trip”, dressing in man’s clothes with a man’s skullcap, when Twelfth Master enters into the room. He is stunned by the unusual appearance and voice of Fleur. The shots move in slow-motions with the rhythm of the singing. The camera doesn’t follow the 180 rule. Instead, it moves around Fleur and Twelfth Master. The frames are only head-and-shoulders shots in shallow focuses. All the attentions are focused on their eyes. It is easy to tell that Twelfth Master falls in love with Fleur at the first sight. Unlike Casino or other films with prostituted women, Rouge is not a movie of women’s images from men’s views. Twelfth Master is looking into Fleur’s eyes while Fleur is concentrating on his eyes. Their looking at each other is not in a way that a client is looking a prostitute up and down but a mutual and equal way of reading into each other’s inner world. Stanley Kwan, the famous gay director, carefully chooses the man’s clothing for the first scene of Fleur. The man’s clothing not only reveals Fleur’s refusing of her social identity—a prostituted woman, but also states Kwan’s opinion of prostituted women: they are normal human beings, and have the same rights to respect and be respected. Singing the Cantonese Ballad is used as the reflection of Fleur’s tragic death as well as the talents show of a well-trained courtesan. B. Fleur: I know what kind of status I belong to, and never expect much. It is very important for the prostituted women to separate their minds from the prostituted bodies. Fleur is one of the prostituted women who hold the double-self identification. She believes the prostituted women are normal women, longing for a normal life with a secure relationship to other people (see Jeffreys, 1997; Hoigard and Finstad, 1986). She goes directly to Twelfth Master’s mother, seeking for her agreement and support to their marriage. The socially experienced Mrs. Chen deliberately introduces “Ru Qian Longjing” (Longjing Tea on Virgin’s Breasts) to Fleur when the servants are serving this tea. Fleur’s desires to be an ordinary woman and lead a secure life are destroyed by Mrs. Chen’s cunning reminding of her identity---a prostituted woman can never be pure. Her heart is torn into pieces when she tries on the cloth for Twelfth Master’s fiancée at Mrs. Chen’s request. Fleur realises she belongs to another world, an evil and fallen world in people’s eyes. She is nothing but an object used by men and the society. We can see Fleur’s heart-breaking facial expressions and the tearing eyes through the transparent fabric, which is covered above the camera as if the tailor is putting the cloth on Fleur.
