蟠桃是中国古代神话传说中仙桃。相传三月三日为西王母诞辰,每年的這一天西王母大开盛宴,以蟠桃为食,宴请众仙,众仙也纷纷赶来祝寿,是为蟠桃会。据说蟠桃十分神奇,小桃树三千年一熟,人吃了体健身轻,成仙得道;一般的桃树六千年一熟,人吃了白日飞升,长生不老;最好的九千年一熟,人吃了与天地同寿,与日月同辉。
1922年美国植物学家约瑟夫-.洛克(Joseph F·Rock l884-1962)受美国国家农业部、美国国家地理协会和美国哈佛大学植物研究所指派,经缅甸到达中国西南部收集植物标本,并以云南丽江为总部,度过了自己生命中最重要的27年。此间他走遍了川滇藏大香格里拉的广大地区,成为英国作家希尔顿著名小说《消失的地平线》的人物原型,也是香格里拉概念的最初渊源。在丽江生活期间,习惯了西方生活习惯的洛克始终不会饮用云南普洱茶,相反倒学会了饮用本地一种药酒,且最喜欢喝酒佐女房东送给他的香格里拉独古当指云寺产“阿洛”桃子。据传这种桃子是忽必烈南征时路过丽江留下的品种,因为是蒙古桃子,当地土人称为“阿洛”桃子,这种桃色泽鲜艳,硕大饱满,单果平均重500克,口味独特,营养丰富,含有15种人体必需的氨基酸,在桃子的39项营养指标中,33项
