Sometimes a draw can seem like a loss and Ipswich Town fans will wake up this morning feeling exactly that after their side threw away a 3-1 lead to allow Sheffield United to escape with a point they scarcely deserved.
Roy Keane, who has presided over ten matches without a win since taking over as manager at Portman Road, must wonder what he has to do to get a win after watching Chris Morgan arrive at the back post in the final seconds to hit home a bobbling ball that had been dropped by Richard Wright, the goalkeeper.
“It should have been [three points], it was close but not close enough,” Keane said. “It has nothing to do with luck, we were 3-1 up and we should have closed the game out.
“Does it feel like a defeat? Possibly not because we have a point and have scored three goals away from home.”
Keane would no doubt have gleefully taken that point after nine minutes when United, who signed Richard Cresswell on a three-month loan from Stoke City earlier in the day, opened the scoring.
Gareth McAuley cleared an innocuous delivery straight to Ched Evans, of United, whose shot cannoned skywards into what looked like a regulation gather for Wright. But when the chips are down, as is the case for Ipswich at present, luck often deserts you. When Darius Henderson nudged Wright enough for him to drop the ball, allowing the centre forward to finish, the goal was allowed to stand.
