Germany has committed $1.22 billion to support the COVID-19 Tools Accelerator, a global partnership to promote equitable access to COVID-19 testing, treatment, vaccines and personal protective equipment. Last month, the co-chairs of the accelerator committee - South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoll - called on 55 countries to contribute their "fair share" to closing the gap. This will be calculated based on the size of their national economies and how much they stand to gain from a faster recovery in the global economy and trade. German Finance Minister Christian Lindner announced the pledge at an online meeting of G7 finance ministers. Germany will also set aside an additional $253 million for its domestic COVID-19 response.

"We call on other countries to follow Germany's lead and contribute their fair share as we seek to end the critical phase of the pandemic this year," he said. It is only by acting together that we can achieve this." The COVID-19 Tool-Accelerator was established just weeks after the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in March 2020. Covax is one of its four pillars. Germany has provided strong support since the LAUNCH of the COVID-19 Tools Accelerator, and this new commitment undoubtedly strengthens the country's support, who said.
