The Australian Government has introduced changes to remove discrimination against same-sex couples and their children from Commonwealth law.

Why are changes being made? This will result in same sex-couples receiving the same treatment as opposite-sex de facto couples, both as partners and parents.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), already recognises same-sex relationships within its migration and citizenship programs in some circumstances. These changes will increase the range of visas and citizenship provisions available to same-sex couples.
When will changes take effect? Changes to migration and citizenship legislation will take effect from two key dates.
