In-limbo striker Joel Griffiths is keen to extend his stay with Chinese champions Beijing Guoan, because he believes another year in the Super League could land him an unlikely World Cup spot.

Spurred on by Alex Brosque’s surprise Socceroos call-up for Saturday night’s Asian Cup qualifier in Oman, the 30-year-old striker, whose loan with Beijing officially expires on November 30, hasn’t abandoned hope of belatedly cathing the eye of Pim Verbeek.

Nine goals in 17 starts made Griffiths Beijing’s joint top scorer – and there would surely have been more but for two lengthy bans totalling 12 games, the second of which still has three games to run.
