Russian authorities have detained the owner and manager of a night club where 103 people were killed and at least 134 were injured and fired early Saturday. Officials say the pair was taken in for violating fire safety rules at the Lame Horse night club in Perm. The club caught fired when its club's ceiling was ignited with fire works which usually have lower temperatures and conventional ones. The spokesman said most of the victims died from carbon dioxide poisoning.

An Italian court has convicted an American college student on murdering her British roommate. The court sentenced 22-year-old Amanda Knox 26 years in prison after a year long trial that drew intense media attention.
Knox's lawyer and members of her family said it will file and appeal against the verdict.

More than 1000 soldiers from the U.S., Britain and Afghanistan are pressing deeper into a key Taliban strong hold in southern Afghanistan. A U.S. spokesman said today's goal was to disrupt the Taliban presents and supplied chain. Meanwhile the national security advisor for U.S. President Barack Obama says the revise strategy for Afghanistan were focused on engagement among other things with local leaders. VOA correspondent Al Pessin has the details. Retired General James Johns told foreign reporters Friday the key threat of the strategy
involves security ,good governance at the national and prevential levels , economic development that ends the dependence on puppy growing and "we want to pay more attention to local leaders ,travel leaders ,mayors, district heads and to make sure that strain of good governments is descent as far as we can down to the local communities of Afghanistan." General Johns says that is an important part of
a countering assurgency strategy designed to convince ordinary Afghans to turn against the Taliban depriving them of
their ability to operate. But he says the effort also involves a military dimension for U.S. led as well as for the Afghan and Pakistani security forces. General Johns says another key indicator of progress will come of the Afghan forces play a greater role in their country security.
